5 Habits to Avoid to Help Prevent Wrinkles

While genetics may play a role in the development of wrinkles, there are also some habits that have proven to be detrimental to the skin that can cause wrinkles. Expression lines, crow’s feet, fine lines and wrinkles can all be prevented by limiting your exposure to the sun, watching your facial expressions, avoiding cigarettes, monitoring your sleeping position and eating healthy.
Sun Exposure
The UV rays of the sun are damaging to the elastin and collagen in your skin. Collagen and elastin keep your skin flexible and firm and when they start to collapse the skin begins to sag and wrinkles develop. Look for wrinkle creams and moisturizers that offer UV protection in order to limit your skin’s exposure to these damaging UV rays.
Facial Expressions
If you make facial expressions in a repetitive way they will leave wrinkles behind. Years of making the same expressions over and over again can leave permanent furrows that are also known as laugh lines, crow’s feet and frown lines. Take a look in the mirror and see how your facial expressions are influencing the development of permanent wrinkles and either try to avoid some of these expressions or make sure that you are applying the right wrinkle cream to these areas.
Smoking
Smoking has been proven to be a contributor to wrinkles. Research conducted on identical twins has shown that the one twin that smokes develops more wrinkles than the one that doesn’t. Smoking leads to small lines around the mouth and smoke is damaging to elastin fibers and collagen.
Sleeping Position
Watch your sleeping position since this can be a major contributor to the formation of wrinkles. If you sleep on your side you’ll have the tendency to develop more wrinkles on your jawline and cheeks and if you sleep with your face down you’ll end up with more forehead lines. The ideal sleeping position to ward off wrinkles is on your back.
Nutrition
The skin is the largest organ of the body so it makes a lot of sense that poor nutrition will lead to damaged skin. Processed sugar is known to break down the collagen in your skin and vitamin deficiencies can also be damaging. A healthy diet will leave you glowing on the inside and out.
